so long ? San Francisco You know how some businesses have 'soft openings'? I was sometimes attending my own 'soft closing' for the last few months. Business dropped off to next to nothing and I didn't care. I updated my site less frequently and let my advertising lapse. E-mails sat unanswered. When my pager gave out last month I just shrugged. I knew this career that had taken such good care of me would come to an end one day, though perhaps with a little more fanfare, but that's what memoirs are for. I'm reminded of the second most frequent question I was asked at public forums: "what are you going to do when you're fifty?" My pat answer was always "raise my price!" While I still don't know what I'll be doing at fifty, and who really does, I'll continue to lead the kind of life where my photo collection does a better job at displaying my riches than my bank account. Still, even the fastest film misses important details, and no prose is so tight that it prevents emotions from slipping through the spaces between words. Before I could learn more about what swirled around my feet and fingers, I felt I needed to make room first. Enough room where someone else could fit, so I decided to give up aspects of my life that kept getting in the way. And now I'm looking forward to writing the next chapter in my life. To everyone who has touched me in some way (couldn't leave without a supremely lame double entendre!), thank you so much. I encourage you to stretch your boundaries by pursuing what feeds your passion, while staying true to what keeps you centered. All the best, -LK p.s.- July: no more boyfriend, so show me your soft opening... |
